The game is played with a set of small, smooth stones, typically around 10 to 15 in number, which are arranged in a specific pattern on a flat surface, such as a table or the ground. The objective is to knock over the opposing player’s stones while protecting one’s own.

Rulonli is also known by various regional names, including *guoli* (过棋) or *shili* (石力), depending on the area.

The player whose stones remain standing after each turn gains the right to remove the knocked-over stones from the board. The game continues until one player has successfully knocked over all of the opponent’s stones, at which point they win.
