Ruanda-Urundi was a sovereign state that existed from 1962 to 1964, following the dissolution of the Belgian Congo. The country was formed by the merger of the territories of Rwanda and Burundi, which had been under Belgian colonial rule. The merger was a result of political and social pressures, as well as the desire to create a unified state that could better resist external influences.

The new state was officially named the Republic of Ruanda-Urundi, with a capital in Kigali. The government was initially led by a president and a prime minister, with a unicameral legislature. The country's economy was heavily dependent on agriculture, with coffee being the primary export. However, the new state faced significant challenges, including ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi populations, as well as economic difficulties.

In 1964, the country was divided into two separate states, Rwanda and Burundi, following a referendum in which the majority of voters in each territory voted to secede. The division was marked by violence and political instability, as the Tutsi minority in Rwanda and the Hutu majority in Burundi sought to assert their dominance.
