RuBisCOkatalyysi
RuBisCOkatalyysi refers to the catalytic activity of the enzyme RuBisCO, which stands for Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. This enzyme plays a crucial role in photosynthesis by catalyzing the initial step of carbon fixation, where atmospheric carbon dioxide is incorporated into organic molecules. Specifically, RuBisCO catalyzes the reaction between ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) and carbon dioxide. This reaction forms an unstable six-carbon intermediate that quickly breaks down into two molecules of 3-phosphoglycerate. This process is fundamental for the synthesis of carbohydrates in plants, algae, and cyanobacteria.
However, RuBisCO also possesses an oxygenase activity, meaning it can react with oxygen instead of carbon dioxide.
