Rowboats

Rowboats are small vessels propelled by human power using oars. They are used on lakes, rivers, and coastal waters for recreation, fishing, and transport. Most rowboats have a simple hull, one or more seats, and oarlocks attached to the gunwale. Propulsion is produced by rowers using oars; in sweep rowing each rower handles a single oar, while in sculling a rower handles two oars.

Oars may be attached to fixed oarlocks or sprung oar pins; many recreational rowboats have fixed seats and steering via a stern-mounted rudder or tiller. Racing or heavy-use rowboats may have sliding seats to maximize reach.

Materials range from wood to modern fiberglass, aluminum, and composite hulls, affecting weight, stiffness, durability, and maintenance. Hull designs vary from flat-bottom to rounded, chosen for stability, load, and water conditions. Rowboats are typically crewed by one to four or more rowers. They may be rowed with one oar per person (sweep) or two oars per person (scull).

Safety and upkeep involve inspecting oars and oarlocks, checking buoyancy, and ensuring life jackets are available, especially for children and non-swimmers. Rowboats remain popular for beginners due to simplicity, low cost, and ease of use, and they have a long history as a basic form of human-powered water transport and recreation.
