Rochefort

Rochefort is a commune located in the Charente-Maritime department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of southwestern France. The town is situated on the west coast of the Bay of Biscay, approximately 84 kilometers south of La Rochelle.

Rochefort has a rich history dating back to the 12th century, when it was an important trading port. During the 18th century, the town gained significant attention as the site of the construction of the French Royal Navy's flagship, the Anne of Austria. Rochefort was also a key location during the French Resistance movement during World War II.

Today, Rochefort is a popular tourist destination known for its picturesque medieval quarter, historic harbor, and stunning scenic coastline. The citadel of Rochefort was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list as part of the fortifications of Vauban and Vauban Atlantic coastline in 2008.
