Ristlõiketihedus

Ristlõiketihedus, also known as cross-section density, is a concept used in physics and engineering to describe the probability of an interaction occurring between a particle or radiation and a material. It is essentially a measure of how "thick" a material is to a particular type of interaction, irrespective of the material's bulk density.

The concept is often represented by the symbol $\sigma$ and has units of area, typically barns (1 barn = $10^{-28}$ square meters). A larger cross-section density indicates a higher probability of interaction. For example, in nuclear physics, the neutron capture cross-section density of a material quantifies how likely a neutron is to be captured by an atom of that material.

Ristlõiketihedus is dependent on the type of incident particle or radiation, the target material, and the energy of the incident particle. It is not a fundamental property of the material itself but rather a measure of its interaction potential with a specific probe.
