Ringnettverk

Ringnettverk, also known as a ring network, is a type of local area network (LAN) topology in which each node is interconnected in a circular fashion, forming a closed loop or ring. Data travels around the ring in one direction, passing through each node until it reaches its intended recipient. This configuration ensures that every device has a direct connection to two neighboring devices, facilitating the transfer of data across the network.

Ring networks can be implemented using various technologies, including Token Ring and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface). In Token Ring networks, a special data packet called a token circulates around the ring, permitting only the device holding the token to transmit data, which minimizes collisions and enhances network efficiency. FDDI, designed for high-speed backbone networks, also employs a ring topology but utilizes dual counter-rotating rings for increased fault tolerance and reliability.

Advantages of ring networks include predictable data transfer times and efficient handling of local traffic, especially in small to medium-sized networks. However, they are susceptible to the failure of individual nodes or links, which can disrupt the entire network unless redundancy or fault-tolerance measures are implemented. Modern network designs often incorporate hybrid topologies or switch-based architectures to address these limitations.

Ring networks played a significant role in early LAN implementations but are less common today due to advancements in switched Ethernet technology and other topologies that offer greater flexibility and scalability. Nonetheless, their principles persist in specific industrial and mission-critical applications where deterministic communication is essential.
