Rikostutkinnan

Rikostutkinnan, or the criminal investigation process in Sweden, is a structured procedure designed to ensure fairness and transparency in the investigation and prosecution of criminal offenses. The process begins with the reporting of a crime to the Swedish Police Authority (Polismyndigheten). The police conduct an initial investigation, which may include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and collecting statements. This phase is crucial as it sets the foundation for the subsequent legal proceedings.

Once the initial investigation is complete, the case is referred to the Swedish Prosecution Authority (Åklagarmyndigheten). The prosecutor evaluates the evidence and decides whether to proceed with the case. If the prosecutor decides to prosecute, the case is assigned to a public prosecutor who will handle the legal proceedings.

The prosecution phase involves the public prosecutor presenting the case in court. The accused has the right to a fair trial and can present their defense. The court then reviews the evidence and makes a decision based on the law and the facts of the case. The Rikostutkinnan process is governed by the Swedish Criminal Procedure Act (Brottsbalken) and aims to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and due process for all parties involved.
