Metallurgy utilizes enrichment processes to extract valuable metals from ores. Froth flotation is a common technique where finely ground ore is mixed with water and chemicals. Air is bubbled through the mixture, causing the particles of the desired mineral to attach to the air bubbles and rise to the surface as a froth, which is then skimmed off. In nuclear engineering, enrichment is crucial for increasing the proportion of fissile isotopes, such as Uranium-235, in natural uranium. This is necessary for most nuclear reactors and weapons. Gaseous diffusion and gas centrifuges are the primary methods used for uranium enrichment, exploiting the slight mass difference between isotopes. The goal is to achieve a higher concentration of the desired isotope for specific applications.
