Riigist

Riigist is the elative singular form of the Estonian noun riik, meaning state or country. In Estonian grammar, the elative case expresses origin or source and is formed with the suffix -st. Therefore riigist translates roughly as “from the state” or “out of the state,” and it is used to indicate something’s origin, the source of funding or material, or movement away from a state entity.

Common uses include denoting origin or source associated with the state, as well as funding or ownership contexts. For example, riigist rahastatud projekt would mean “a project funded by the state.” Riigist pärit toode describes a product of state origin. Riigist lahkunud ametnik refers to an official who has left the state or government. The elative form can also appear in phrases indicating movement from a place, such as ta naasis riigist (“he returned from the state”).

In practice, riigist appears most often in formal, administrative, or legal contexts where the source or origin related to the state is being specified. It contrasts with other elative forms such as maalt (from the land/country) or riigist väljapoole (out of the state) in expressions that emphasize location, movement, or provenance.
