Riigikohuse

Riigikohus is the supreme court of Estonia. It is the highest judicial body in the country and is responsible for ensuring the consistent application of laws. The Riigikohus has jurisdiction over all judicial matters in Estonia and is the final court of appeal.

The court is composed of seventeen judges, including the Chief Justice. Judges are appointed by the Riigikogu (Estonian Parliament) upon the nomination of the President of Estonia. Their term of office is for life, or until they reach the age of retirement.

The Riigikohus operates in three chambers: the Constitutional Review Chamber, the Civil Chamber, and the Criminal Chamber. The Constitutional Review Chamber reviews the constitutionality of laws passed by the Riigikogu and other legal acts. The Civil Chamber hears appeals in civil cases, and the Criminal Chamber hears appeals in criminal cases.

The decisions of the Riigikohus are final and binding on all other courts. It plays a crucial role in upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights and freedoms of citizens in Estonia. The court's primary function is to interpret and apply the law, ensuring justice is administered fairly and impartially.
