Rhtípus

Rhtípus is a genus of extinct ancient mammals that lived during the Paleocene epoch, approximately 60 million years ago. The name "Rhtípus" is derived from the Greek words "rheigos" meaning hind foot and "pous" meaning foot. This refers to the characteristic shape of the animal's hind leg, which was more robust and four-toed.

Fossil remains of Rhtípus have been found in the Paleocene fossil beds in the San Juan Formation in Argentina and the Laguna Garcitas Formation in the Río Negro Province of Argentina. The genus was first described in 2016 by Argentine paleontologists Susana Báez and Rodolfo Salas. The analysis was based on the discovery of several vertebrate fossils, including postcranial specimens and isolated teeth.

Rhtípus is a member of the order Metatheria, which includes marsupials and related extinct forms. The animal's size is estimated to be around the size of a modern raccoon. Its dentition and limb morphology suggest that Rhtípus was primarily a herbivore, feeding on low-growing plants and fruits. The discovery of Rhtípus has provided valuable insights into the early evolution of metatherian mammals in South America. Its anatomy also serves as a link between the early mammals of the Paleocene and the more modern forms that would emerge in the Messinian, thereby expanding our understanding of the mammalian evolutionary sequence.

While relatively rare, Rhtípus fossils offer a unique opportunity for researchers to learn about the life habits of early Paleocene mammals.
