Reykskynjarar, also known as smoke detectors, are devices designed to detect smoke, a common byproduct of fire. Early detection of smoke is crucial as it often precedes the presence of flames, allowing occupants more time to evacuate and alert emergency services. These devices are typically battery-powered or wired into a building's electrical system.

There are several types of smoke detection technology. Ionization alarms are sensitive to fast-burning fires with smaller smoke particles. Photoelectric alarms, on the other hand, are better at detecting slow-burning fires that produce larger smoke particles.
