It may also include refurbishing and reselling, recycling or disposal, and continuous improvement through analytics.

Key components include return policies and authorization workflows, a reverse logistics network, intake and triage facilities, inspection protocols, and disposition options such as restocking, refurbishment, resale, recycling, or disposal. Integration with ERP, WMS, and ecommerce platforms is common to synchronize inventory and financial data.

Technology and data play a central role, including barcode or RFID tagging, return merchandise authorization systems, analytics for trend detection, and automation for intake, sorting, and processing. A retursystem uses performance metrics such as return rate, cycle time, value recovered, and customer impact.
