Retseptoritüüpide refers to the classification of receptors in biology. Receptors are molecules, typically proteins, that receive signals and initiate a response within a cell. They play a crucial role in cellular communication, enabling cells to interact with their environment and with each other. Receptors can be broadly categorized based on their location and the type of signal they bind.

One major classification is based on location: cell surface receptors and intracellular receptors. Cell surface receptors are embedded in the plasma membrane and bind to signaling molecules that cannot easily cross the membrane, such as peptide hormones and neurotransmitters. Intracellular receptors are located within the cytoplasm or nucleus and bind to signaling molecules that can pass through the cell membrane, such as steroid hormones and thyroid hormones.

Another classification is based on the type of signal transduction mechanism. This includes ion channel-linked receptors, G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), enzyme-linked receptors, and intracellular receptors. Ion channel-linked receptors directly alter the permeability of the cell membrane to specific ions upon binding of a ligand. GPCRs, a large family of receptors, activate intracellular signaling pathways through the action of G proteins. Enzyme-linked receptors have enzymatic activity themselves or are associated with enzymes, and ligand binding triggers this activity. Intracellular receptors, upon binding their ligand, often act as transcription factors, directly regulating gene expression. Understanding these receptor types is fundamental to comprehending how biological systems function and how drugs can interact with these pathways.
