Retikulosyyttimäärä refers to the count of reticulocytes in a blood sample. Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells, meaning they are newly released from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. They represent the bone marrow's response to the body's need for red blood cells. A reticulocyte count is a common laboratory test used to evaluate red blood cell production.

Normally, reticulocytes make up about 0.5% to 1.5% of the total red blood cell population. A high reticulocyte count, also known as reticulocytosis, indicates that the bone marrow is actively producing red blood cells, often in response to blood loss, hemolysis (the destruction of red blood cells), or iron deficiency anemia that is being treated. Conversely, a low reticulocyte count suggests that the bone marrow is not producing enough red blood cells, which can be seen in conditions like aplastic anemia, certain chronic diseases, or vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.

The reticulocyte count is a crucial diagnostic tool for physicians to assess the effectiveness of bone marrow function and to help differentiate between various types of anemia. It provides insight into whether the anemia is due to insufficient production or excessive destruction of red blood cells. This information guides further diagnostic investigations and treatment strategies.
