Rethra

Rethra is a term that can refer to several distinct entities, primarily a historical pagan deity and a geographical location associated with it.

In ancient Slavic paganism, Rethra was a deity worshipped by the Rani, a West Slavic tribe inhabiting the island of Rügen (modern-day Germany). The primary sanctuary of Rethra was located in the fortress of Charenza. According to historical accounts, notably by Helmold of Bosau, Rethra was depicted as an idol with multiple arms, and the cult was associated with a prosperous and powerful priesthood. The deity was believed to influence warfare and fortune. The idol was eventually destroyed by Danish forces in the 12th century as part of the Christianization of the region.

The name Rethra is also associated with the historical Slavic stronghold and religious center located at Arkona on Rügen. This site served as the main cultic center for Rethra and was a significant political and spiritual hub for the Rani people before its destruction. The exact etymology of the name Rethra is debated among scholars, but it is generally understood to be of Slavic origin. The veneration of Rethra highlights the complex religious landscape of the pre-Christian Slavs and their sophisticated idolistic practices.
