Restverliezen

Restverliezen, a Dutch term, translates to "residual losses" or "remaining losses" in English. This concept primarily appears in the context of engineering, particularly in fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. It refers to the energy that is inevitably lost in a system due to various unavoidable inefficiencies, even after all practical measures have been taken to minimize them.

In fluid mechanics, restverliezen can occur in pipes, pumps, and turbines. These losses stem from factors such as friction between the fluid and the pipe walls, turbulence generated by changes in flow direction or pipe diameter, and internal friction within the fluid itself. While engineers strive to reduce these losses through smooth pipe surfaces, optimized designs, and efficient machinery, a certain amount of energy dissipation is always present.

In thermodynamics, restverliezen are associated with the second law of thermodynamics, which states that no process can be perfectly efficient. These losses manifest as heat dissipation to the surroundings, incomplete combustion, or inefficiencies in energy conversion processes. Even with ideal components, there will always be some degree of energy conversion that is not transformed into useful work.
