Resorboid

Resorboid refers to a biodegradable material designed to be absorbed by the body over time. This property makes it useful in various medical applications where a temporary scaffold or delivery system is required. Resorboid materials are typically polymers that undergo hydrolysis or enzymatic degradation within the physiological environment, breaking down into non-toxic byproducts that are naturally eliminated by the body.

Common examples of resorboid materials include polylactic acid (PLA), polyglycolic acid (PGA), and their copolymers, often referred to as PLGA. These polymers are widely used in the manufacturing of dissolvable sutures, surgical meshes, drug delivery devices, and tissue engineering scaffolds. The rate of resorption can be controlled by adjusting the polymer's molecular weight, crystallinity, and the ratio of lactic to glycolic acid in copolymers.

The advantages of using resorboid materials in medicine are numerous. They eliminate the need for a second surgical procedure to remove implants, reduce the risk of infection or inflammation associated with permanent foreign bodies, and can be engineered to release therapeutic agents in a controlled manner. The biocompatibility of these materials is crucial, ensuring they do not elicit adverse immune responses.
