Reproductivity

Reproductivity is a term used to describe the efficiency and output of reproductive processes within a population, ecosystem, or system. It is not a standardized term in most scientific literatures, but is sometimes used to synthesize how reproduction translates into viable offspring under given resources and conditions.

In population biology, the closest established concepts are fecundity, fertility, and the net reproductive rate (R0). Reproductivity can be viewed as the integrated output of these factors, incorporating generation time and survivorship to reflect actual reproductive success over a period.

Measurement relies on life-table analyses and age-structured models. Key metrics include R0, the intrinsic rate of increase (r), and generation time, all of which describe how productive a population is across time. Environment, resource availability, disease, predation, and climate influence reproductivity by affecting fecundity and survival.

In human demography, reproductivity relates to reproductive health, access to contraception, education, economic conditions, and cultural norms, which shape birth rates and population growth. Health policies and social programs can modify effective reproductivity by altering survival and the age at reproduction.
