Repolymerisation

Repolymerisation is a chemical process where monomers, which are small molecules, join together to form a polymer, a larger molecule. This is a fundamental concept in polymer chemistry and is the basis for the creation of many plastics and synthetic materials. The process can occur through various mechanisms, including addition polymerisation and condensation polymerisation.

Addition polymerisation involves the direct joining of monomers without the loss of any atoms. In this type of reaction, monomers add sequentially to a growing polymer chain, often initiated by a free radical, cation, or anion. Common examples include the formation of polyethylene from ethylene monomers and polypropylene from propylene monomers.

Condensation polymerisation, on the other hand, involves the reaction between monomers where a small molecule, such as water, is eliminated as a byproduct. This typically occurs when monomers have functional groups that can react with each other. Examples include the formation of polyesters from diols and diacids, and polyamides (like nylon) from diamines and diacids.

The specific conditions required for repolymerisation, such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of catalysts, are crucial for controlling the reaction rate, the molecular weight of the resulting polymer, and its overall properties.
