Reparatsioon

Reparatsioon is a term used in Estonian and other languages to denote repair, restoration, or compensation for damages. In everyday usage, it refers to the act of fixing or restoring the function and value of objects, equipment, buildings, or infrastructure, often involving diagnostic assessment, part replacement, or refurbishment. It can also describe compensation in international relations and history, known in English as reparations.

In engineering and maintenance, reparatsioon covers corrective repair and preventive upkeep. Typical steps include initial inspection, diagnosing faults, sourcing appropriate parts, carrying out repairs or replacements, testing after work, and documenting the work performed. The aim is to restore performance, safety, and reliability while extending the service life of the item.

In the context of international law and history, reparatsioon (reparations) refers to payments or other measures imposed on a defeated state as compensation for damages caused during a conflict. Historical examples include post-World War I arrangements that required monetary payments and transfers from Germany, and various postwar settlements in Europe. The concept remains controversial, with debates about fairness, adequacy, and economic impact.

In contemporary usage, reparatsioon can also mean restorative actions for social harms, such as financial compensation to individuals or communities affected by government policy, corporate wrongdoing, or human rights abuses, as well as symbolic acts like official apologies.
