Repülterek is a fictional concept used in speculative fiction to describe airborne settlements or habitats that float above the landscape. The name derives from Hungarian repül, meaning “to fly,” and tér, meaning “space,” and is commonly translated as “flying spaces” or “airborne habitats.” In most depictions, repülterek are constructed as buoyant platforms or ships with a buoyant envelope—such as a gas bag or layered fabric—supported by a lightweight frame. They move by wind currents and sail-assisted propulsion, using anchoring lines and ballast to maintain stability. Living quarters, farms, and workshops are arranged around central hubs, with water and fuel stored in insulated bays.

Social organization among repülterek communities ranges from egalitarian to captain-led federations. Trade routes connect multiple fleets, exchanging goods such as sugar, salt, fish, and textiles, carried in designated holds and linked by rope bridges. Navigation relies on wind charts, celestial cues, and ground-based beacons; safety concerns include storms, encounters with other fleets, and the risks of gas leaks or fires.

Historically within its fictional setting, the concept arose in a period of rising sea levels and scarce arable land, offering mobility and resilience. In popular culture, repülterek appear in several novels and role-playing games as settings for exploration, diplomacy, and commerce. The motif is used to explore themes of adaptation, community, and the ethics of mobility.
