Renzi

Renzi is an Italian surname. In contemporary public life it is most commonly associated with Matteo Renzi, a prominent Italian politician who led the country in the mid-2010s.

Matteo Renzi was born in 1975 in Florence, Italy. He served as the mayor of Florence from 2009 to 2014, gaining national attention for his reformist approach and youthfulness. In February 2014 he became the prime minister of Italy, heading a center-left government. His premiership focused on a program of economic and institutional reforms designed to liberalize the labor market, reduce bureaucracy, and promote European integration.

Two major policy strands defined Renzi’s government: labor market reform and constitutional reform. The Jobs Act, a package of measures intended to boost employment and flexibility in the labor market, was a hallmark of his economic agenda. In parallel, his administration proposed a constitutional reform to reorganize the Italian Parliament, including changes to the powers and role of the Senate, with the aim of streamlining governance. The reform effort culminated in a 2016 referendum, which rejected the proposal and led to Renzi’s resignation as prime minister.

After leaving the premiership, Renzi remained active in Italian politics and founded the political party Italia Viva in 2019. The Renzi surname also appears among other public figures, athletes, and professionals in Italy, reflecting its broader use as a common Italian family name.
