Renormierbaren

Renormierbaren is a German term that translates to "renormalizable" in English. It is a concept primarily used in quantum field theory and particle physics. A theory is considered renormalizable if its infinities, which arise during calculations of physical quantities, can be systematically removed by redefining a finite number of parameters in the theory. These parameters, such as mass and charge, are then related to their experimentally measured values.

The process of renormalization is crucial for making predictions in quantum field theory that can be compared to experimental results. Without it, the calculations would yield infinite and therefore unphysical answers. Not all quantum field theories are renormalizable. The Standard Model of particle physics, which describes the fundamental particles and forces (except gravity), is a prime example of a renormalizable theory. This renormalizability is a key reason for its success in explaining a vast range of experimental observations.

Conversely, theories that are not renormalizable are often considered problematic or incomplete at high energies. While techniques exist to handle some non-renormalizable theories, they typically require introducing new physics at higher energy scales to resolve the infinities. The quest for a quantum theory of gravity, for instance, faces challenges related to its non-renormalizability within the standard framework of quantum field theory.
