Relativitetsteorins

Relativitetsteorins, or the theory of relativity, is a cornerstone of modern physics developed by Albert Einstein. It fundamentally changed our understanding of space, time, gravity, and the universe. The theory is divided into two main parts: special relativity and general relativity.

Special relativity, published in 1905, deals with the relationship between space and time in the absence of gravity. Its two core postulates are that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers and that the speed of light in a vacuum is constant for all observers, regardless of their motion or the motion of the light source. From these postulates arise several counterintuitive consequences, such as time dilation (time passes slower for a moving observer) and length contraction (objects appear shorter in the direction of motion). It also famously introduced the equation E=mc², demonstrating the equivalence of mass and energy.

General relativity, published in 1915, extends special relativity to include gravity. Einstein described gravity not as a force, but as a curvature of spacetime caused by the presence of mass and energy. Massive objects warp the fabric of spacetime around them, and other objects follow these curves, which we perceive as gravitational attraction. This theory has been experimentally verified through phenomena like the bending of starlight by massive objects and the precession of Mercury's orbit.
