The Reichsmarine was the navy of the Weimar Republic, existing from 1919 to 1935. It was the successor to the Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) which was largely dismantled and restricted by the Treaty of Versailles following World War I. The treaty imposed severe limitations on the size and capabilities of the German navy, restricting it to a small number of surface vessels and prohibiting submarines.
