Most species possess a flexible outer pellicle, one or more flagella, and a calcified or silica-based test in some lineages. A distinctive feature is the regellosome, a cytoskeletal complex involved in shape control and division. Members show a variety of feeding modes, including suspensor feeding and mixotrophy.

Distribution and ecology: In the fictional world, Regellales is described as abundant in temperate coastal waters and near mid-shelf zones. They contribute to the microbial loop, grazing on smaller phytoplankton and bacteria, and serving as prey for microzooplankton. Environmental conditions such as nutrient availability and water temperature are described as influences on their population dynamics.
