Referenssisignaalit, or reference signals, are crucial components in wireless communication systems, particularly in mobile networks like LTE and 5G. Their primary function is to aid the user equipment (UE), such as a smartphone, in understanding and adapting to the wireless channel. Without these signals, the UE would struggle to decode the data sent by the base station (eNodeB or gNB).

Reference signals are pre-defined, known sequences that are transmitted by the base station at specific locations in time and frequency. The UE compares the received reference signals with its knowledge of what these signals should be. This comparison allows the UE to estimate the characteristics of the radio channel, including its amplitude and phase variations. This channel estimation is vital for several key processes.

Firstly, it enables coherent demodulation of the data signals. By knowing how the channel has affected the reference signals, the UE can apply a compensating factor to the received data, effectively "undoing" the channel's distortions. Secondly, channel state information (CSI) is derived from the reference signals. The UE reports this CSI back to the base station, informing it about the quality of the link. This allows the base station to make intelligent decisions about resource allocation, power control, and selecting the most suitable modulation and coding scheme (MCS) for data transmission. Different types of reference signals exist, each serving specific purposes, such as cell-specific reference signals (CRS) for general channel estimation and demodulation reference signals (DMRS) for more accurate data demodulation.
