Reesteriseerimist is a chemical process used to convert esters into other esters. This reaction involves treating an ester with an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst, which can be an acid or a base. The alcohol's alkoxy group replaces the original alkoxy group of the ester, forming a new ester and the original alcohol.

This transesterification reaction is a fundamental concept in organic chemistry and has significant industrial applications. One of the most common examples is the production of biodiesel. In this process, triglycerides (a type of ester found in vegetable oils and animal fats) are reacted with methanol or ethanol. The glycerol backbone is cleaved, and the fatty acid chains are esterified with methanol or ethanol, yielding fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) or fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), which are the primary components of biodiesel.

Reesteriseerimist also plays a role in the production of plasticizers, which are additives that increase the flexibility and durability of plastics. It is also utilized in the modification of fats and oils for various food applications, such as altering melting points or improving texture. The reaction conditions, including temperature, catalyst concentration, and reactant ratios, are carefully controlled to optimize the yield and purity of the desired products. The reversibility of the reaction means that equilibrium needs to be considered, often by removing one of the products to drive the reaction forward.
