**Reconnaissance**

Reconnaissance, derived from the French term *reconnaître* (meaning "to recognize"), refers to the process of gathering information about a target area, person, or system before engaging in further action. It is a fundamental concept in military, intelligence, and strategic planning, as well as in civilian contexts such as law enforcement, cybersecurity, and urban planning.
