Reclames

Reclames is the Dutch plural noun for advertisements, a term commonly used in the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking parts of Belgium. In everyday language, reclames can refer to advertising content presented in various media, including posters, newspapers and magazines, radio and television commercials, online banners, and sponsored content. The singular reclame is used for a single advertisement, while reclames can reference the advertising industry as a whole or multiple ads.

Historically, reclame developed alongside modern mass media. With the growth of radio, television, and print media in the 20th century, organized advertising became a central feature of commercial life. In retail contexts, reclame also covers promotional materials such as leaflets (reclamefolders) and in-store displays.

Regulation: In the Netherlands and Belgium, advertising is governed by codes issued by bodies such as the Stichting Reclame Code (Advertising Code Foundation) and its Nederlandse Reclame Code. Claims in reclame are expected to be truthful, not offensive, and suitable for the audience; complaints are handled by the Reclame Code Commissie.

Modern context: Today reclames span traditional media and digital formats, including display ads, video ads, sponsored social media content, and influencer promotions. The term remains widely used in ordinary speech, though formal discussions may use "advertising" or "advertisements" in English, or the singular Dutch term reclame in its general sense.
