Receptorenzymen

Receptorenzymen, also known as receptor kinases or receptor guanylyl cyclases, are a class of enzymes that are anchored to the cell membrane. They possess an extracellular ligand-binding domain and an intracellular catalytic domain. When a specific signaling molecule, or ligand, binds to the extracellular domain, it triggers a conformational change in the enzyme. This change activates the intracellular catalytic domain, initiating a downstream signaling cascade within the cell.

The primary function of receptorenzymen is to translate extracellular signals into intracellular responses. This is crucial for a wide range of cellular processes, including cell growth, differentiation, metabolism, and immune responses. Different types of receptorenzymen are activated by distinct ligands. For example, receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) are activated by growth factors, while receptor guanylyl cyclases are activated by nitric oxide.

Dysregulation of receptorenzymen activity is implicated in numerous diseases, most notably cancer. Many cancers are driven by mutations that lead to the overactivation of RTKs, promoting uncontrolled cell proliferation and survival. Therefore, receptorenzymen are important targets for drug development, with many therapeutic agents designed to inhibit their aberrant activity.
