Reallokointi

Reallokointi is a Finnish concept that refers to the relocation of Roma people, also known as Gypsies or Travellers, from urban areas to rural or peripheral regions. The practice of reallokointi dates back to the 1960s and 1970s and was implemented by Finnish authorities as a way to address housing shortages and social problems in cities.

During this period, many Roma families were forcibly relocated from Helsinki and other major cities to rural areas, often with little notice or compensation. The relocations were typically justified as measures to improve the social and economic integration of the Roma population, but critics argue that they were often carried out with little regard for the human rights and dignity of the affected individuals.

Many Roma families who were relocated during this time experienced significant hardship, including poverty, poor living conditions, and limited access to education and employment. Today, the Finnish government acknowledges that the reallokointi program was a failed policy that led to long-term social and economic problems for the Roma population.

Efforts have been made in recent years to address the legacy of reallokointi, including apologies from Finnish officials and attempts to establish more inclusive and equitable policies towards the Roma community. However, the issue remains a point of contention, and many Roma activists and advocacy groups continue to push for greater recognition and support for their rights and needs.
