Reaktsioonibarjäär, also known as the activation energy, is the minimum amount of energy that must be provided to a chemical system for a chemical reaction to occur. It represents the energy required to reach the transition state, a high-energy intermediate state where chemical bonds are breaking and forming. Without sufficient energy to overcome this barrier, reactant molecules will not transform into products, even if the overall reaction is energetically favorable.

The concept of the reaction barrier is fundamental to understanding chemical kinetics, the study of reaction rates. Reactions with higher activation energies proceed more slowly because fewer molecules possess the necessary energy to surmount the barrier at any given time. Conversely, reactions with lower activation energies tend to be faster.

Factors such as temperature and the presence of catalysts can influence the reaction barrier. Increasing the temperature provides more kinetic energy to the molecules, increasing the proportion that can overcome the barrier and thus speeding up the reaction. Catalysts, on the other hand, work by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, effectively lowering the barrier and accelerating the reaction rate without being consumed in the process. The reaction barrier is a crucial factor in determining the feasibility and speed of chemical transformations.
