Reaktioväliaineet, often translated as reactive intermediates, are molecular fragments formed during a chemical reaction that are more reactive than the starting materials and typically have a very short lifetime. They are not isolated products but rather transient species that exist only during the course of a chemical transformation. These intermediates play a crucial role in determining the mechanism and outcome of many organic reactions.

Common types of reactive intermediates include carbocations, carbanions, free radicals, carbenes, and nitrenes. Carbocations are positively charged carbon atoms with an incomplete octet, often formed by the heterolytic cleavage of a covalent bond. Carbanions, conversely, are negatively charged carbon atoms with a complete octet, typically generated by the removal of a proton from a carbon atom. Free radicals possess an unpaired electron, making them highly reactive and prone to dimerization or abstraction reactions. Carbenes and nitrenes are neutral species containing divalent carbon and nitrogen atoms, respectively, and are known for their insertion and addition reactions.

The detection and study of reactive intermediates are vital for understanding reaction pathways. Techniques such as spectroscopy (e.g., ESR for radicals, NMR for transient species), trapping experiments (where the intermediate reacts with a stable molecule to form a detectable product), and kinetic studies are employed to elucidate their structure and reactivity. Understanding reactive intermediates allows chemists to control reaction conditions, optimize yields, and design new synthetic strategies.
