Rawkonvertering

RAWkonvertering is the process of turning raw image data captured by a digital camera into a viewable and exportable image. RAW files contain sensor data with minimal pre-processing, preserving dynamic range and color information for later adjustment.

During RAWkonvertering, software performs demosaicing (debayering) to reconstruct full-color pixels, applies white balance, adjusts exposure and tone, performs noise reduction, sharpening, and lens distortion corrections, and assigns a working color space and bit depth.

Most RAW workflows are non-destructive: edits are stored as instructions and do not overwrite the original data. Sidecar files (for example XMP) or embedded metadata record these settings, allowing re-interpretation later or export with different parameters.

The result of RAWkonvertering is an intermediate or final image that can be exported to formats such as TIFF or JPEG, often at 16-bit or 8-bit depth depending on the workflow. Some pipelines render a 1:1 preview or generate multiple outputs from a single RAW file.

Common software tools include Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom, Capture One, DxO PhotoLab, RawTherapee, and darktable. Some ecosystems support standardized RAW formats such as DNG to improve interoperability.

Considerations include camera and lens profiles, sensor characteristics, and color management. The aim of RAWkonvertering is to maximize image quality and give photographers control over white balance, tone, color rendition, and detail before final output.
