Rasterbilddaten

Rasterbilddaten, also known as raster data or bitmap data, represent digital images as a grid of individual colored squares called pixels. Each pixel is assigned a specific value that determines its color and intensity. This grid structure is fundamental to how digital images are stored and displayed.

The resolution of raster data is defined by the number of pixels in its width and height. A higher resolution means more pixels, resulting in a more detailed and sharper image, but also a larger file size. Common raster image formats include JPEG, PNG, GIF, and TIFF. These formats differ in how they compress the pixel data and their support for features like transparency and animation.

Raster data is widely used in various applications, including digital photography, web graphics, and image editing. Its pixel-based nature makes it ideal for representing complex visual information with smooth gradients and fine details. However, when raster images are scaled up beyond their original resolution, they can become pixelated or blurry because the computer has to interpolate the missing pixel information. This is a key difference compared to vector graphics, which are based on mathematical equations and can be scaled infinitely without loss of quality.
