Rammeoverføringer, often translated as frame relay, is a telecommunications technology used for transmitting data between network nodes. It operates at the data link layer of the OSI model. Frame relay was designed to be an efficient and cost-effective way to send data over wide area networks (WANs).

The technology utilizes virtual circuits, which are logical connections established between two endpoints. These virtual circuits can be permanent virtual circuits (PVCs) or switched virtual circuits (SVCs). PVCs are always available, while SVCs are established only when needed and then disconnected.

Frame relay networks use a technique called statistical multiplexing, which allows multiple data streams to share a single physical link. This is achieved by packetizing data into frames and sending them over the network. Error checking is primarily handled by the end devices rather than the network itself, which contributes to its speed and efficiency.

When a frame arrives at a frame relay switch, the switch examines the frame's header to determine the destination virtual circuit. It then forwards the frame to the appropriate outgoing link. The absence of extensive error checking within the network infrastructure allows for higher throughput compared to older technologies like X.25.

While frame relay was widely adopted in the past, it has largely been superseded by newer technologies such as Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and broadband internet services. However, understanding frame relay provides insight into the evolution of WAN technologies and the principles of efficient data transmission over shared network resources.
