The rakenusnumero is typically assigned to each separate building on a kiinteistö, such as the main house, a garage, a barn, or other outbuildings. It helps keep cadastral records precise when several structures share the same street address. The numbering is usually numerical, and in some municipalities it can be alphanumeric, depending on local practice. The rakennusnumero is distinct from the street address, but the two systems interact in official records, registration, and service provisioning.

In practice, the rakennusnumero is used in property registers, building permits, taxation, land-use planning, and infrastructure management. It also supports emergency services, postal routing, and property insurance by providing a clear, stable identifier for each building on a property.

Assignment and maintenance of rakennusnumero are governed by municipal land surveying authorities in coordination with national land administration bodies.
