Rajoitusmerkit

Rajoitusmerkit, also known as ration coupons or ration stamps, were a system of controlling the distribution of food and other essential goods during times of scarcity, particularly during World War I and World War II. The system was designed to ensure fair distribution of limited resources and prevent hoarding.

In Finland, rajoitusmerkit were first introduced in 1939, at the start of the Winter War with the Soviet Union. The Finnish government issued ration coupons to citizens, allotting a certain amount of food and other essential goods per person. The coupons were redeemable at authorized retailers, who were required to honor the coupons in exchange for food and other goods.

Rajoitusmerkit were used to control the distribution of goods such as food, clothing, and fuel. The coupons were stamped with the date and were only valid for a certain period. Citizens were required to have the coupons with them when shopping, as retailers were not allowed to accept cash or substitute coupons. The system was enforced through a network of rationing committees and inspectors who monitored compliance.

Rajoitusmerkit played a significant role in Finland's wartime economy, helping to maintain social stability and ensuring that everyone had access to basic necessities, despite the scarce resources. The system remained in place until 1944, after the Continuation War with the Soviet Union.
