Radioteleskooppipeilejä, known in English as radio telescope mirrors or primary dishes, are essential components of radio telescopes. These large, parabolic structures are designed to collect and focus faint radio waves originating from celestial objects. Unlike optical telescopes that reflect visible light, radio telescope mirrors are constructed from highly reflective materials like metal or specially coated surfaces to efficiently reflect radio frequencies.

The shape of the mirror is crucial. Its parabolic curvature ensures that all incoming parallel radio waves are reflected and converge at a single focal point. At this focal point, a receiver is placed to detect and measure the incoming radio signals. The larger the diameter of the radio telescope mirror, the greater its light-gathering power, allowing it to detect fainter and more distant objects, and to achieve higher angular resolution.

Radio telescope mirrors can vary significantly in size, from a few meters in diameter to hundreds of meters for single-dish telescopes. In some cases, multiple dishes are linked together in an interferometer array, effectively creating a single telescope with an aperture equivalent to the distance between the farthest dishes. This technique dramatically enhances the resolution of the telescope, enabling astronomers to study fine details in radio sources. The precision manufacturing and alignment of these mirrors are critical for their performance in capturing the subtle signals from the universe.
