Radikaalireaktioilla, often translated as radical reactions, are chemical reactions involving species with unpaired electrons called free radicals. These radicals are highly reactive due to their unpaired electron, which they seek to pair by abstracting an electron from another molecule or by undergoing other types of transformations.

Radical reactions play a crucial role in various chemical processes, including combustion, polymerization, and biological pathways. They are characterized by a chain mechanism that typically involves three main steps: initiation, propagation, and termination. Initiation is the step where radicals are first formed, often through homolytic bond cleavage initiated by heat or light. Propagation involves the reaction of a radical with a stable molecule to form a new radical and a stable molecule, thus continuing the chain. Termination occurs when two radicals combine, or when a radical reacts with an impurity, thereby ending the chain.

Common examples of radical reactions include the chlorination of alkanes, where chlorine radicals abstract hydrogen atoms to form HCl and alkyl radicals, which then react with molecular chlorine. Another example is the auto-oxidation of organic compounds, where oxygen can initiate radical chain reactions leading to degradation. Understanding the mechanisms of radical reactions is essential for controlling and optimizing many industrial processes and for comprehending complex chemical transformations in nature.
