RVSM
RVSM stands for Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum. It is a program that allows aircraft to fly with only 1,000 feet of vertical separation between them, as opposed to the traditional 2,000 feet. This reduction in separation is made possible by improved aircraft navigation and altitude-keeping capabilities, as well as enhanced air traffic control procedures. RVSM was implemented to increase airspace capacity and reduce flight times and fuel consumption. It is currently in effect in many parts of the world, including North America, Europe, and the Pacific. Aircraft must be RVSM-approved to operate in RVSM airspace. This approval involves meeting specific aircraft equipment and maintenance requirements. The implementation of RVSM has been a significant achievement in aviation, contributing to more efficient and sustainable air travel. It requires a high degree of trust in the accuracy of altimetry systems and pilot adherence to assigned flight levels. The program is continuously monitored and reviewed to ensure continued safety and efficiency.
