RTD lämpötilamittari stands for Resistance Temperature Detector. It is a type of temperature sensor that works by measuring the change in electrical resistance of a material as a function of temperature. RTDs are known for their accuracy, stability, and wide temperature range.

The most common RTD material is platinum, often denoted as Pt100, where Pt signifies platinum and 100 indicates its resistance in ohms at 0 degrees Celsius. Other materials like copper and nickel are also used, but platinum offers the best combination of accuracy and stability across a broad temperature spectrum.

The principle of operation is straightforward. As the temperature increases, the resistance of the RTD material increases proportionally. This change in resistance is then measured by an electrical circuit, which converts it into a temperature reading. RTDs typically have three or four wires to compensate for the resistance of the connecting wires, ensuring a more accurate measurement.

RTDs are widely employed in various industrial applications where precise temperature monitoring is critical. This includes process control in chemical plants, food and beverage manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and automotive testing. Their durability and reliability make them suitable for harsh environments. Compared to thermocouples, RTDs generally offer higher accuracy and better repeatability, although they are typically slower to respond to temperature changes.
