ROCdependent

ROCdependent is a term used in statistics and machine learning to describe methods, models, or evaluation practices whose conclusions depend on the operating point selected on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The ROC curve plots the true positive rate against the false positive rate across all classification thresholds, and a ROCdependent approach explicitly ties its interpretation and optimization to that threshold choice.

In practice, ROCdependent design emphasizes that performance metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and derived measures (for example, cost-based or profit-based criteria) vary with the threshold. This contrasts with threshold-agnostic assessments like the area under the ROC curve (AUC), which aggregate performance over all thresholds. Methods in this category include threshold optimization to meet a target false positive rate or true positive rate, score calibration to a desired operating point, and decision rules that adapt to changing risk preferences or costs of misclassification.

Applications of ROCdependent thinking appear in domains where operating points reflect real-world tradeoffs, such as medical diagnostics, fraud detection, and spam filtering. For instance, a medical test might be calibrated to achieve a minimum sensitivity at a patient risk threshold, while a fraud system may optimize for a specific tolerance of false positives to maximize expected profit.
