RNA-related processes are fundamental to the functioning of all living organisms, playing critical roles in gene expression, protein synthesis, and cellular regulation. Ribonucleic acid (RNA) is a polymeric molecule essential for various biological roles, distinct from but closely interacting with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). Unlike DNA, which primarily stores genetic information, RNA serves as a messenger, catalyst, and structural component within cells.

RNA molecules are synthesized through a process called transcription, where a segment of DNA is copied into RNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase. The most well-known RNA type is messenger RNA (mRNA), which carries genetic information from DNA to ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis. During translation, ribosomes decode mRNA sequences to assemble amino acids into proteins, with transfer RNA (tRNA) acting as adaptors that deliver specific amino acids to the ribosome.

Beyond these roles, RNA also functions in gene regulation, including microRNA (miRNA) and small interfering RNA (siRNA), which help control gene expression by binding to complementary mRNA sequences, either promoting degradation or inhibiting translation. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is a structural and catalytic component of ribosomes, facilitating protein synthesis. Additionally, RNA can act as an enzyme, known as a ribozyme, capable of catalyzing biochemical reactions without the need for protein assistance.

RNA-related research has expanded significantly with advancements in molecular biology, including techniques like reverse transcription PCR and RNA sequencing. These tools enable scientists to study RNA function, regulation, and interactions in detail, contributing to insights into diseases, evolutionary biology, and potential therapeutic applications. RNA interference (RNAi) is a prominent example, where small RNA molecules suppress gene expression, offering potential for gene therapy and crop protection. The versatility and dynamic nature of RNA make it a central focus in modern biological and medical research.
