RNAekstraksjon is a fundamental laboratory procedure used to isolate RNA from biological samples. RNA, or ribonucleic acid, is a crucial molecule involved in gene expression and protein synthesis. The accurate extraction of RNA is a prerequisite for many downstream molecular biology applications, including gene expression analysis, RNA sequencing, and the study of non-coding RNAs.

The process typically involves several key steps. First, cells or tissues are lysed to release their contents. This is often achieved using chemical agents that disrupt cell membranes and denature proteins that can degrade RNA. Following lysis, a variety of methods are employed to separate RNA from other cellular components such as DNA, proteins, and lipids. Common techniques include phenol-chloroform extraction, which exploits differences in solubility, and column-based methods utilizing silica matrices that selectively bind RNA under specific salt conditions. These methods are designed to preserve the integrity of the RNA molecule, as it is generally less stable than DNA. The final step usually involves precipitation and washing of the RNA, followed by resuspension in a suitable buffer. The quality and yield of the extracted RNA are then assessed using spectrophotometry or gel electrophoresis.
