RNAPolIII

RNA polymerase III (RNAPolIII) is a type of RNA polymerase enzyme responsible for the transcription of small non-coding RNAs, such as transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 5S ribosomal RNAs, and small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs). It is one of the three major RNA polymerases found in eukaryotic cells, with the others being RNA polymerase I and RNA polymerase II. RNAPolIII is a large complex consisting of multiple subunits, including the core enzyme and various regulatory proteins.

The transcription process catalyzed by RNAPolIII begins with the binding of the enzyme to specific promoter sequences in the DNA. Unlike RNA polymerase II, which requires a complex set of transcription factors for initiation, RNAPolIII can initiate transcription independently. The enzyme then unwinds the DNA double helix and synthesizes a new RNA strand complementary to one of the DNA strands. The newly synthesized RNA is then processed and modified to form the mature non-coding RNA product.

RNAPolIII plays a crucial role in various cellular processes, including protein synthesis, ribosome biogenesis, and gene regulation. Mutations or dysregulation of RNAPolIII can lead to various diseases, such as dyskeratosis congenita and sclerosteosis.
