While REACH primarily focuses on the safe use of chemicals by humans, its scope inherently includes potential impacts on the environment. The regulation requires companies that manufacture or import chemicals into the EU to register these substances, providing data on their properties, uses, and potential risks.

This data includes information on ecotoxicity, which assesses the potential harm of a chemical to various environmental compartments such as aquatic life, terrestrial organisms, and microorganisms. Persistence and bioaccumulation potential are also evaluated. Persistent chemicals remain in the environment for long periods, while bioaccumulative substances can build up in living organisms.

REACH also mandates the assessment of environmental exposure. This involves understanding how chemicals might be released into the environment during their lifecycle, from manufacturing and use to disposal. Based on these assessments, authorities can impose restrictions on the use of certain chemicals or require authorization for specific high-risk applications to minimize environmental damage.
